Bright Light of Little Paris: the film by Romanian director Robert Eugen Popa wins Montecatini International Shorts Film Festival 2025

At the prestigious Montecatini International Shorts Film Festival 2025, Romanian film director Robert Eugen Popa was present with his new film „The bright lights of little Paris” („Lumina strălucitoare a micii Paris”), a production that captivated both the audience and the jury with its aesthetic refinement and thematic depth.

Those who attend film festivals know that, beyond the glamour of the screenings, there is the joy of discovering motivated, cultured and visionary filmmakers - and Popa fits perfectly into this category.

The film, a medium-length film with touches of elegant satire and dreamlike tones, was screened in the presence of the director and his production team, under the artistic guidance of Marcello Zeppi, director of the Montecatini Festival.

A universe between dream and reality

„The Bright Light of Little Paris” invites you into a world suspended between reality and dream, where meanings are subtly interwoven and humour becomes a form of artistic lucidity. It is an exquisite work, full of visual symbols, in which Popa explores the everyday absurd and the irony of existence - a personal trademark already recognisable in his filmography.
Italian critics have described it as a „Beckett more sarcastic”, able to combine the poetry of the absurd with the cinematic precision of his shots.

Outstanding cast and memorable performances

The film stands out for balanced and expressive distribution, in which each actor finds his place in a carefully directed cinema choreography.
In particular, Maia Morgenstern, one of the greatest actresses of Romanian cinema, offers an impressive and subtle presence, completing the atmosphere of the film with depth and charisma.
The main character navigates between dreaming and action, disorientation and courage, in an imaginative and slightly surreal register - an allegory about humanity, aspiration and identity.

Robert Eugen Popa - the director who unites the classic and the modern

Popa is a film director innovative and erudite, He is passionate about classical culture and the Latin language, which he often integrates into his scripts. His film writing is dense, full of cultural references and subtle nuances, but always connected to contemporary themes.
This combination between tradition and modernity, between irony and lyricism, makes him one of the most promising voices of the new Romanian cinema.

A vision worth growing

Critics present at Montecatini noted that the film could be developed into a feature-length version, capable of broadening its impact and giving it the visibility it deserves in international distribution circuits.

As written William Blake, „Imagination is not a state of mind: it is human existence itself.”
And Robert Eugen Popa's film is a demonstration of this idea - a work that transforms imagination into cinematic reality, illuminating the „little Paris” of Eastern Europe with a universal radiance.

„Robert Eugen Popa manages something rare: to make a film that provokes, moves and makes you think at the same time.
‘The Bright Light of Little Paris’ is proof that Romanian cinema has the strength to reinvent itself and dialogue with the world.
At Stellaria, we support filmmakers who have the courage to dream differently - and Robert is just such an artist.”
- Alexia Tătaru, actress and founder of Stellaria Film
